I was recently reading the amazing book Free by Chris Anderson and came across a very profound sentence that really struck a chord with me:

Every abundance creates a new scarcity.

The author was explaining that the newly available abundance of mostly free information creates a scarcity on behalf of the recipient, in both attention and time.

The statement certainly isn’t new, but it’s very timely in the internet marketing world. After attending an internet marketing workshop recently, I conducted a survey with new internet marketers asking about the challenges they face. One of the recurring themes was that new internet marketers continually suffer from information overload and lack of focus. The survey results were also backed up by information from the Warrior Forum and a survey conducted by Kyle Tully last year.

One of the hardest things about learning something new is to manage ourselves – to manage our psychology and teach an old dogs new tricks. The most difficult aspect of learning a new behaviour or skill is often the ‘unlearning’ of an old behaviour or habit that is counterproductive to what we want to achieve.

Our psychology plays havoc especially when we’re creating new habits that challenge our core needs (certainty, significance, love/connection, variety, growth and contribution, adapted from Tony Robbins). So in most cases the theory of doing something new (like practicing swimming on dry land), will in no way compare to actually doing this new thing (actually swimming in water) – there are just too many variables in the reality that theory can’t predict.

Just do it!

The best advice anyone can give is to simply start doing something. Prepare for it by reading and researching a little if you want – but the longer you wait to DO, the more difficult it will be come. Everything that is normal for you today, was probably once difficult and scary. You can only make something more normal by tackling your fear and just doing it.

Rewarding Good Behaviour and Punishing Bad Behaviour

One of the best ways to support the creation of new habits, is to manipulate yourself. You need to reward good behaviour and punish bad behaviour. This way you will quickly gravitate towards what you like (your reward which is a result of good behaviour) and move away from what you don’t like (your punishment resulting from bad behaviour).

An example could be cleaning – if you’ve stuck to your good behaviour that supports creating new habits (whether these are health habits, productivity habits, business habits, or anything else) you can pay someone else to clean your house.

If you’ve indulged in bad behaviour (say you slept in when you should have gone for a bike ride) you’ll have to clean your house yourself.

A friend of mine, who is a very successful forex trader, has used these techniques to reinforce the right trading behaviour – he is now a millionaire.

Make sure you share your rewards and punishments with someone who can check whether you’re sticking to your plan – cheating the plan would mean cheating yourself.

Have you heard of the 80/20 Rule? It’s also called the Pareto Principle (named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto) and it says that 80 percent of your results should come from 20 percent of your effort. For example, in your business, a vital few activities result in 80 percent of your income.

Unfortunately for most people, they are stuck on the wrong side of the Pareto Principle. They keep focusing on the 80 percent of their time that delivers hardly any return. Sounds familiar?

Especially if you’re self-employed or your working with the internet, it’s easy to constantly get distracted from your main line of work. In his recent post How To Never Get Anything Done, Dean Hunt the world’s leading Buzz Marketer, described how most people spend more time fearing a project, worrying about a project and avoiding a project, than actually doing it. Luckily, I recently spent some time learning from Dean and another great internet marketer, James Schramko, and one of the main lessons was to create more results with less effort.

Leverage 80 Percent of Results With 20 Percent of the Effort

So, how do you create more results with less effort? One Word: Leverage!

Leverage the vital few activities that create 80 percent of your results. Are you great at interviewing people? Well, one video interview can be a TV show or downloadable video, it can also be a podcast and turned into a report. Imagine what a whole series of video interviews could do? An online TV show, a series of podcasts, a Book and a membership site which combines all these products, can be created from the simple act of filming some interviews.

Think about it, how many activities in your business do you repeat over and over again? Would it be worth filming those activities to turn them into training videos? How many repetitive tasks do you do each day? How can you leverage your time by setting them up once and being able to access them automatically? That is leverage.

What we can learn from Barbie

Do you have a best-selling product? Can you simply replicate it, re-package it and sell it again? You wouldn’t be the first one. Think of Barbie. She started as a single doll, then she was replicated with different clothes – she even kept the same name! And that’ been going on for over 50 years. And to spice things up a little bit, Mattel added Barbie’s friends and family who were just like Barbie, but in different sizes and nationalities.

The Barbie doll range implements some other incredible leverage techniques: Upselling, Downselling and Cross-selling.

You want to buy more than just Barbie? Well, you can also get her a house, a car, and a horse. You don’t want Barbie to be lonely? Well you better buy her a man (Ken), or at least a friend. You don’t want to buy an entirely new Barbie Doll? Maybe just a new outfit will do.

Lesson: Play To Your Strength

So what is the best way to implement the Pareto Principle and leverage the 20 percent of your effort that delivers 80% of your results?

• Find the vital few activities that deliver 80 percent of your results.
• Determine what makes these results so popular with your market.
• Find out what else your market wants.
• Offer your market these additional products and services as up-sells, cross-sells and down-sells from your original offer.

Communicatons Degree Graduation 2007

Many of the students who came to listen to us were wondering about the career options with a communications degree and which might be the careers available for communications degrees.

I felt honoured to be invited as part of the 5 person panel for the second time, especially since I had made my career change of founding my own business to consult to business on their online presence. Not a conventional career path, but I feel it’s very important for students to know that they can follow their dream job and earn a great income with it as well – and don’t need to climb the traditional corporate latter if they prefer independence and flexibility.

The other panel members represented a wide range of more traditional information and media professions, including a senior knowledge manager in an accounting firm (who was my boss when I was still working in the corporate world), an information architect, a librarian who engages students through twitter and facebook and a librarian at a major media organisation.

While everyone shared what their current work involves, the underlying message really was that the information and media worlds are changing (and the internet certainly is!) and that some of the career options with a communications degree don’t even exist yet.

My personal message to get across was the fact that a changing world – whether career concerned or otherwise – presents a massive opportunity. Change and new applications present a great chance for early adopters, they can become experts, teachers and coaches by getting to know a new application before anyone else does (waiting for Google Wave anyone?). It’s contained in a great quote that really represents our changing times:

“The world is changing very fast. Big will not beat small anymore. It will be the fast beating the slow.” – Rupert Murdoch

My presentation just summarised why I love working in internet marketing (and on my own business) and the skills that I use consistently that have enabled me to create my own business and live the way I do.

In summary, when students are looking for the answer to the omnipresent question What can I do with a degree in communications? my advice is to think broadly: Career options with a communications degree does not mean you need climb the corporate ladder in an organisation. You can be flexible, self-employed, working from home or even own your own business – if you’re willing to learn and adapt.

Some holidays we just sit there and are lazy. We come back and we haven’t grown at all. In fact, we are no more compassionate, understanding, smarter, fitter, healthier or more loving than before. The only thing that might have grown is our waistline.

Other holidays are experiences. They are life changing. They challenge our compassion, our understanding, our fitness, our health, our ability to recuperate and grow. Walking the Kokoda Track was that kind of a holiday for me.

And as a result I have grown. I have a new perspective of myself and my abilities. I have much greater compassion and understanding of something that I have never wanted to confront, engage in, or even made an attempt to understand: war.

For you, my readers, I’d like to recount 7 simple, but profound lessons I have truly internalised while walking the Kokoda Track – and share with you how they apply to your business and your life.

1. Mind Over Matter – There is a beautiful saying: Whether you believe you can, or you believe you can’t, you’re right. This is also true for walking the Kokoda Track. It has been conquered by children as young as 5 years old, and just recently it was completed by an 83 year old. If they can do it, you can right? If you believe so.

2. Focus – Focus on your main outcome and make everything else irrelevant. Nothing else matters, it’s just an excuse you’re telling yourself, a story that you run because you’re simply not willing to do what it takes. There were many distractions along the Kokoda Track: I didn’t like walking through rivers and in soaking wet shoes for days on end; I didn’t like putting wet, dirty and smelly clothes on in the mornings; Sometimes I didn’t like the heat, the humidity, the rain, the cold. The truth is, it doesn’t matter. If you’re willing to do what it takes to get to where you want to go.

3. Pain is temporary, Quitting is forever – This might be a harsh statement for some, but it really rang true for me along the Kokoda Track. I was feeling exhausted, I was sore, I had a stomach bug and was nauseous.

   When we encounter challenges in life we can make one of two choices: We either push through the pain, grow and move on. Or we retreat, with the tail between our legs, and forever wonder “What If….”. Sure, we encountered some massive challenges along the Kokoda Track – physical and mental challenges. But instead of quitting, calling the Helicopter and having completed only half of the Kokoda Track, we pushed through. And what amazed me most was how quickly the pain was forgotten and how quickly the joy and fun returned.

4. Step By Step – Any mountain is climbed, any task is achieved, by taking one step, then another step, then another step… No matter how long the climb seems, no matter how difficult the challenge you may face, take one step at a time, do as much as you can today, and trust that you will know what the next step is tomorrow.

5. Follow someone who know what they’re doing – In most cases you will eventually find the way on your own – but isn’t it much quicker, and even easier to follow someone who knows what they’re doing, who’s been there before? Whether it’s a local guide on the Kokoda Track, or it’s a business mentor, or a life coach, you’ll be quicker and you’ll enjoy the trip with some great company!

   One of the funniest stories from our trip happened on the day we took a detour to GPS a new route. Nobody in our group had walked this way before, not even the locals, and we had hired someone from a nearby village to take us through the bush. After long discussions with out Australian Track leader about where we were and whether we were walking in the right direction, Knoxy, one of the locals and our cook, solved the dispute by simply saying to Chad: “Put away that map and follow the black man in the Bush.” Right he is.

6. The importance of Team – Of course we all know that a team is important, right? But how often do we try and do things on our own, when it would be easier, and much more fun, to have a great team around us? Our journey along the Kokoda Track would not have been the same without our team – The Boys.

There are many internet marketing courses out there, and believe me, I have seen lots of them. Despite attending a few internet marketing courses in my time, I believe it’s essential to keep up to date with what’s going on and to keep learning from the best.
